For Jaap van Lagen, the Budapest weekend was all about putting an end to a dry spell: With a third place the Dutchman secured his second podium of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season 2018, while Nick Yelloly scored an important points haul with a fifth-place finish and reduced the gap even further to the championship leader.
Fifth position in qualifying showed that Jaap van Lagen is once again capable of fighting for the leading positions after a series of setbacks in past races. A brilliant start catapulted the Dutch driver forward as the lights went green, and he entered the first corner in third position. A tough battle with the fourth-placed Zaid Ashkanani prevented van Lagen from fighting for the lead, however the FACH AUTO TECH driver made sure he didn’t relinquish his podium place – despite a number of attacks from behind. Van Lagen crossed the line to score his second podium of the season following the second place in Barcelona.
Teammate Nick Yelloly got off to just as good a start, moving up one position to fifth as the race began. The British driver initially held the upper hand against his direct championship contender Michael Ammermüller. The German was stuck to the back of the FACH AUTO TECH driver’s rear spoiler, but Yelloly held off all of his overtaking attempts and crossed the line in fifth position. Yelloly’s twelve points cut Ammermüller’s lead at the top of the championship to just three points.
Christof Langer took sixth position in the ProAm class and 25th overall at the Hungaroring. A collision on the first lap forced the German driver to take avoiding action, and he was unable to close the gap to the leaders.
“Jaap and Nick secured great results”, said Alex Fach. “We are really happy with our points haul this weekend, especially after the disappointing qualifying. We are delighted that Jaap was able to put an end to his dry spell and finished on the podium in third. Nick managed to finish in front of Michael Ammermüller and close the gap to the championship leader even further. The two-point advantage over Michael was really important and could make the difference at the end of the season.”
The Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup is now on its summer break until August. The seventh race of the season takes place at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium between 24 and 26 August.
