It did not take long for Gustav Burton to make his presence known at the front of the field in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. In only his second race weekend in the series, the FACH AUTO TECH newcomer shone with a strong qualifying performance and fierce fighting spirit in the race. The bottom line, however, is that the Austrian round of the championship held little to celebrate for Alex Fach’s team.
“Gustav can be really proud of the step he has taken,” said team owner Alex Fach. “In the cup, a good position on the grid is half the work. With sixth place, he gave himself an optimal starting position. In the race it was also a pleasure to watch him fight. He worked hard all weekend long to improve himself.”
A collision halfway through the race prevented Burton from converting the hard work into points. In the midst of the numerous fights for the top 5, the 20-year-old clashed several with opponents and finally spun when turning into the Würth turn. “That was especially tough. I would have loved to have ended this great weekend with a good result,” he said afterwards.
The most successful driver from the FACH AUTO TECH squad was Morris Schuring – even though pretty much everything that could go wrong did go wrong. The young Dutchman led the qualifying for a while but dropped down to 15th place shortly before the end. In the race, a spin through no fault of his own threw him back to the end of the field. Schuring tried to limit the damage and finished in tenth place after a brilliant recovery race.
Alexander Fach was also well on his way to a top 10 result. But even the 21-year-old was not spared from bad luck. When trying to make up positions, he was hit by a competitor who braked too late. “My tyre was damaged and I was forced to park the car. It’s just a shame,” he concluded.
Guest starter Peter Hegglin finished 26th. Hegglin usually competes in the Porsche Sports Cup Suisse. A long-held dream of his came true in Styria when he took part in the most popular of all Porsche one-make cups.
The hunt in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup continues on 7 to 9 July when the championship returns to the historic Silverstone Circuit in Great Britain.
